Science and technology has given birth to many procedures and methodologies which are useful in the conversation of the water. Amongst various, reverse osmosis (RO) is a filtration method which easily removes several types of large molecules and ions from the solutions.

All together these units burn an estimated 85 tones of coal everyday. The CMDA has mapped areas, which have the maximum usage of coal.

Most of these units are located in suburban Kolkata such as Dunlop Bridge, Baranagar, Cossipore, Maniktala, Topsia, Tangra and Tiljala. These units are used to power the manufacture and production of ceramics, plywood, tanning and leather finishing units, dyeing, and bleaching and rubber goods. These units contribute nearly 30 per cent of the particulate matter in the atmosphere.

There are 6 main pollutants of concern according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). They are Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) of less than 10 and 2.5 microns (PM10 and PM2.5), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and Ozone. Only adding to the situation is that most of India has a Tropical or Sub-Tropical climate and with generally warmer temperatures there is a tendency for pollutants to be trapped closer to the ground, leading to an even greater danger for Humans.

What Is Being Done

As part of a major air-cleansing drive, the state government has decided to make the units switch from solid to liquid fuel to fire the boilers. The state Pollution Control Board is currently in talks with industry associations to devise mechanisms to prevent and control pollution by industrial units.

Many air quality monitoring agencies have set up as the first step in a larger effort to keep their air clean. For example Delhi has set up several real time air quality monitoring stations to track certain specified air pollutants and toxins in that city. The city Nagpur is looking to take similar measures regarding its environmental problems. The measures suggested include increasing stack height on sponge iron plants from 30 meters to 80 meters, de-sulpherisation of coal used by the industrial units and scrubbing of SO2 (sulphur dioxide) from smelters, furnaces and DRI furnaces.

Similarly, the adoption of properly sized Filter Bags and Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs) with higher efficiency, use of clean fuel by the thermal power plants and aluminum smelters, reduction of kiln accretion and implementation of the recommendations of IIT Kharagpur for sponge iron plants have been emphasized in the report.

Not only the two rivers mentioned by the Haryana state Environment Minister are suffering from water pollution, but also other rivers of the region like Ravi, Satluj and Beas are in bad condition and stinks.

The state government of Punjab is also worried over these issues and is willing to take some sound steps for controlling pollution of water bodies under its constituency. The respected Chief Minister of Punjab, is seriously pushing a centrally funded project for cleaning the rivers flowing through Punjab, but the results are still not visible. The estimated monetary cost of this project is about 138.8 million INR, which was a considerable amount for the central government of India to issue. Providing such a magnificent aid for controlling the pollution of water bodies gives a clear indication of the seriousness of Indian government on the environmental issues.

The major sources of water pollution in these areas are: industrial discharges, municipal wastes and chemical and pesticide runoff from the agricultural land. Although, government of all the states involved have been able to control the industrial discharges and municipal wastes polluting water bodies by passing suitable laws and appointing regulation bodies, but the runoff from the agricultural land is still an unaddressed factor responsible for most of the water pollution. It is the high time that the governments of all Indian states should initiate some awareness programs educating farmers of the various ill effects of the wrong agricultural practices and excessive use of chemicals on their fields.

For survival of our life in the environment, we should preserve a healthy biosphere with all its ecological systems, all plants and animals, fertile soils, pure waters, and clean air.

Now days, natural beauty of the earth is disappearing, as the people around the world destroy the beauty by maximum exploitation of resources. The rate of destruction of the environment is extremely high compared with the past years.

Causes of environmental pollution
A variety of environmental problems now affect our earth. As globalization continues and the earth’s natural processes transform local problems into global issues, some of the problems now affecting the world are acid rain, air pollution, global warming, hazardous waste, ozone depletion, smog, water pollution, overpopulation etc. Smog and toxins are floating in the air, caused by the wastage from industrial smokestacks and by the over use of petroleum-burning vehicles.

Pollution of environment effect the human life. One in five people around the world are dying every year due to factors related to the effect of environmental pollution. But, the most dangerous problem of environmental pollution on human life is the greenhouse effect. The Ecumenical Water Network said about 1.1 billion people worldwide, most of them in Asia, are denied of adequate water and sanitation, while two million people die every year of diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. Most environmental problems are occurring by improper use of energy and resources. The new generation people are not aware of the importance of recycling the energy and conserving it, which in turn leads to more serious problem.

Solution for the environmental problems can be done by reducing the over consumption of natural resources and emission of carbon into atmosphere from vehicles. Try to control the industrial developmental projects that cause water pollution and also the activities which catalysis global warming and climate changes.Reduce deforestation for developmental activities and consumption of non biodegradable materials. Decrease the activities causing pollution of water bodies, air, forests, and soil.

Recycle is the method. Many products are recyclable. By this we can reduce environmental strain. Electronics devices, such as computers and cell phones are recyclable. Create compost plant waste to minimize the waste and carbon dioxide output while creating healthy organic fertilizer. Recycle the used materials with available technologies to reduce deforestation. This can in turn save trees.

Another method is to reuse the spent natural resources and materials manufactured with trees/plants for their conservation. To reduce the demand of the resources, reuse all recycled materials.

Environmental Sustainability means: “Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.” So for this we have to keep the population densities below the carrying capacity of a region, facilitate the renewal of renewable resources and keeping environmental impact and also conserve the environment.” We must remember that God entrusted to us the environment to use it responsibly. Our dominion over nature and other living things means stewardship not domination and exploitation or use without regard for the Earth’s caring capacity to reproduce and rehabilitate”.
